Welcome to the Party

Hi folks. This year I have decided to switch from the old "chat room" to a

more permanent "bulletin board" format so that the conversation can be

on-going without the need for everybody to be on line at once. Just click

on "Post" at the upper right to create and upload your message or respond

to another message. You'll even be able to come back in the days, weeks

and months after the game has ended to use this as a meetingplace if you so

desire. (Please excuse the banner ads you might see on the page; it's how

we got the space for free.) Once your message is composed, click the

"Preview Message" button below to proof-read it,

then be sure to choose an End Date that's reasonably far into the future

and finally, click "Submit" to

post it.

WPOP 30th Anniversary of "The Day the Music Died"

It was a small but lively group of old WPOP jocks, friends & families who gathered to commemorate the 30th avviversary of the day WPOP pulled the plug on music and switched to all news, and ultimately talk and then sports.
WPOP "personalities" in attendance (listed chronologically based upon the earliest appearance on the WPOP airwaves) were Frank Holler, Hal Whitney a/k/a Judge Harrigan, "Brother Jack" Carney, Dude Walker a/k/a Tom Collins, yours truly Lee Gordon, Gerry Brooks, and Jim Bleikamp.
Also in attendance were former members of the sales department as well as staffers from sister stations WMRQ and WHCN: Anita Brown and Jay Schultz and their daughter Sophie, "Beef Stew" Crossen and his wife and son, and Gary Lee Horn and his wife Deb.
There were also a few friends who never had the pleasure to count WPOP among the stops on their radio careers: Bob Cohen, Mike West and Ed Bouder.

WPOP 30th Anniversary "Day the Music Died" (cont.)

The award for the greatest distance travelled went to Dude Walker who flew his Cessna from Washington DC. He and Hal got to swap a few pilot stories. Second place went to Jim Bleikamp who drove up from Princeton, NJ.
There was plenty of discussion about the good and not-so-good old days and we brought up a few names many of us probably haven't thought about for years.
Perhaps most significantly, we decided that since the 50th anniversary of the beginning of WPOP is just a couple of years away, now is the time to start planning to mark that occasion with a really big reunion.

WPOP is why CT Radio Still Sounds Good Today

No doubt WPOP was the first station in CT to have a "modern" top 40 hit

sound back in the l950s and I think it set the standard for everything that

followed. Even today CT has some of the best-sounding contemporary radio

and more choices for pop music than just about anywhere else and I think

that is in large part due to the legacy of l4l0 AM.

Sorry I couldn't make it

Sorry I could not make it to the Day the Music Died. I have always wondered

since I left the swamp why WPOP kept the call letters with a news talk

format. Its like the state of Utah calling their NBA team the JAZZ. We in

the land of Pistol Pete are still burning over that one. Saw the pictures

and am glad to see that Frank Holler went from skinny to full size just as

I did. But Frank had better luck than I did. He got to see picturesque Viet

Nam, and I got to see Hancock Field in Syracuse. At the time, of course, I

thought I was the lucky one. You don't know how boring Syracuse is. Hope to

see you all in two years.

Hope to see you at LeeG's!

My husband, Barry, and I attended Lee's party for the first time last year,

and attended subsequent WPOP get-togethers at the now famous Pump House in

Bushnell Park. It would be great to see old (but still young-looking!)

faces at any upcoming events. I still have my hand in advertising...am a

free lance media buyer and place all of Healthtrax in CT, MA and RI. I

also have a real job too! And two girls, Sarah and Christa, 22 and 18.

Hubby an Asst Principal. Looking forward to seeing as many of you as

possible!

Steelers by 14!

Hey Gang -

Sorry we can't be there, but EEEARLY mornings and a bad cold lead to an
early evening here.

This just in: We can share that Father Jacobs at Holy Trinity in Hartford
this morning reported a devine prediction...Steelers by 14. We like the
sound of that. Seattle's too darned far away to care about. Plus,
Pittsburgh might also lose a hockey team, so we feel a certain kinship and
all that...

Have fun everyone.

Greetings from the Eaton-Robbs

Hi Everybody,

Sorry we couldn't make it this year. Caitlin is still recovering from her
brain surgery, but doing great. She spent some time Saturday on the bench
with the UConn women's hockey team as an honorary assistant coach! Sean is
waving a yellow shirt around..so I guess we're rooting for Pittsburgh.

attend the party since I now live in NY(boo Giants) and this is a work day
for us since we have to update tons of game promos. Hope you guys are all
having a blast and eating better food than I am (left over Caesar salad and
a sugar free latte from Dunkin Donuts). I'm really praying the Pats can
pull it together. This game is really stressing me out! My best to you
